Statement by Korea Verband on the Confirmation of the Impeachment of President Yoon Suk-Yeol
Korea Verband welcomes the decision of South Korea’s Constitutional Court on April 4, 2025, to confirm the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-Yeol. The unlawful imposition of martial law and the attempt to block parliament through military force constituted a massive assault on South Korea’s democratic order. The court’s clear ruling sends a powerful message: democratic principles and the rule of law have withstood the crisis.
This success was only made possible by the tireless efforts of countless people—especially in South Korea, but also in Germany and around the world—who have fought for the protection of democracy over the past months, regardless of class, age, gender, origin, or other characteristics. Korea Verband also took part in protests in Berlin and expressed solidarity with democratic movements.
However, the impeachment of Yoon does not mean the crisis is over. We call for a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for this attack on democracy are held accountable. The very fact that an elected president was able to attempt a coup highlights the deep-rooted structural issues in South Korean politics and society. Only through transparency, legal consequences, and, if necessary, political reform can we prevent such an abuse of power from happening again. South Korea now needs not only new elections but also a sustainable strengthening of its democratic structures.
At a time when democratic principles are under pressure worldwide and authoritarian tendencies are on the rise, Korea Verband remains committed to opposing violence, social inequality, and societal division. Democracy means more than just free elections—it means human and civil rights, solidarity, and the participation of all—especially those most affected by injustice.
